Giant Loop Customers Travel San Diego to Cabo and Back on Honda XR650Ls

A happy customer, Brad Davis, sent us an update on his recent trip to Baja with his friend. They used the Giant Loop Coyote Saddlebag and the Rubber Boa Straps on their trip across deserts and dunes. Here’s what he says:4[1]

“Our Baja trip was the best vacation I have ever taken. Just two guys on Honda XR650L’s riding from San Diego to Cabo and back. We did 2,200 miles over nine days. The Coyote Saddlebags functioned amazingly and were able to carry everything we needed to camp and live for the entire trip. The bags carry weight well and did not noticeably affect how the bike handled. The Rubber Boa Straps were extremely useful and were perfect for carrying a quart of oil or a bottle of tequila.

The trip got better and better every day. We spent one night in a palapa on the beach in San Felipe. We hit 95mph on the salt flats going to Scorpion Bay (the XR wouldn’t go any faster). We rode with the Dessert Assassins Rip to Cabo on a rough section of trail into La Paz. We partied with Playboy models in Cabo. We camped deep in the sand dunes outside of Guerrero Negro. We got lost trying cross the desert at night. And finally made it back to San Diego without any major issues and some great memories.

Thanks
Brad”

Great Basin Saddlebag: It really does fit virtually anything designed to carry a passenger, even scooters!

Great Basin Saddle Bags – They really do fit virtually anything designed to carry a passenger, even scooters

Giant Loop customer Joel, recently took an amazing Italian adventure….on his scooter.

See his account below, and how he’s retrofitted the Giant Loop Great Basin Saddlebags to suit his ride.

We have been on the road for 2 months and 3000 km, with all the clothes for two people stashed in the three dry pods. Although we have not been riding in the rain (much), the bag has seen a lot of rain this spring and so far no leaks when it is properly closed.

great-basin-scooter-1great-basin-scooter-5

The “motorcycle” is a little unconventional: a scooter. This made it a bit difficult to fit the bag on, as the usual exposed parts in a real motorcycle are all covered with plastic on a standard scooter. However, inside of the plastic the frame is not all that different. I had to create a couple of stainless-steel cable loops to extend the passenger foot peg frame inside the plastic so that they could be accessible.

great-basin-scooter-3

In addition, the standard scooter has a filler cap beneath the seat, so it was pretty important that I be able to get the bag off quickly when we fill up (every 200-250 km or so).

great-basin-scooter-2

Most scooters have a bit of a plastic frame behind the seat which is used to attach a top box, and on the Honda this is where I was able to hang on the straps for attachment. Overall, it takes me about a minute to loosen them and flop the bag down for gas tank access, which is not bad at all.

great-basin-scooter-4

Since I had to buy the stainless cable to make the loops, I also used it to make a security cable to hold the bag in place when we are parked. I put a small padlock on the end to keep it in place.

So far, no one has tried to get into it as far as I can tell, or pull it off the scooter. I strapped a Possibles Pouch on the outside to hold a water bottle and my sunglasses case, and it is working great. We have been on the road for 2 months and 3000 km, with all the clothes for two people stashed in the three dry pods. Although we have not been riding in the rain (much), the bag has seen a lot of rain this spring and so far no leaks when it is properly closed.

Thank you Joel!

How have you fit your Giant Loop Gear to your ride of choice? We’d love to hear from you.

Rally Raid Products Honda CB500 Production Update

From Rally Raid:

Good News, we have started production of rear hubs!!

We thought that you would like to know the latest news from Rally Raid Products and the CB500 project. Some of you will be eagerly awaiting the news that we will be ready to start taking orders on our Level 1 and Level 3 Adventure Kits, with wheels in both black and gold. Giant Loop will now have a small number available, with more to follow.

Earlier in the year we took the decision to stop taking orders for the wheel kits. Honestly, we just couldn’t keep up the orders, the hubs were taking far too long to manufacture, and were taking all our machining time for other Honda and KTM billet products.

We have invested in a CNC lathe that will manufacture the hubs in a 1/3 the time they were taking on the CNC milling machine, thus freeing up the milling machine for triple clamps, bar risers, top clamps and all the other billet parts that we design and make in house at Rally Raid Products

We will be at the UK HUBB Meeting form the 16th – 19th June, hoping to meet some of you there, Jenny Morgan will be there to talk about her recent trip to the US with Giant Loop’s Harold Olaf Cecil and Juan Browne the maker of so many You Tube videos on the Honda CB500X.

Giant Loop Riders: 400-Mile “Lost Coast” Dual Sport Weekend on Honda CRFs with MoJavi Saddlebag, Klamath Tail Rack Pack, Pannier Pockets, Ochoco Enduro Tail Pack

By | FAQ, Fitment, Giant Loop Gear, Honda, Reviews, Riders, Saddlebags, Tank Bags, Uncategorized | No Comments

Cory and his buddies recently enjoyed an “epic” dual sport tour in Northern California!

Hello at Giant loop,

I thought I’d send you a few shots from our most recent adventure from the lost coast. Epic 400 mile two day ride with fantastic weather and terrain conditions. Thanks for the great gear. I put it through the ringer with brush, rocks, mud and an exit or two in the in a mud hole and on the gravel. Performed awesome. The waterproof liner for the Klamath tail pack fit perfectly and after several water crossings and a swim in the mud I opened it a the end of the day to find a puddle of water on top of the liner and my wallet, phone, and spare goggles dry as a bone. Look forward to lots more use as our riding season here on the lost coast is just getting started. You guys make it down this way and we’ll take you on a giant loop of our own.
Thanks again
Corey and the riders of the lost coast.

P.s. The pannier pockets with a 1.8 liter platypus hoser hydration bladder worked awesome, back up 1 liter on the other side. 1st ride without a pack on my back! It made a huge difference at the end of the day.

Giant Loop Rider: Cory from Bolivia Motors Tours South America with Coyote Saddlebag on Honda XR650R

By | Fitment, Honda, Riders | No Comments

Cory Rowden, Kiwi owner of and guide for BoliviaMotors, rode his Honda XR650R through Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Brazil last fall with Giant Loop’s Coyote Saddlebag. Here are some of his pics and feedback:

?I?ve just returned from a month riding in Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Brazil during which I used a Giant Loop Coyote bag strapped to the back of a Honda XR650R. We rode over 6000kms and had a fantastic time on a mix of tarmac, cobblestone, dirt and mud road in mixed conditions including rain, sun, cold and extreme heat. We crossed the Andes mountains, floated down the Amazon river and rode BR319 ? officially Brazil?s worst road ? through the heart of the Amazon rainforest. The Giant Loop Coyote gear performed flawlessly and I could not have chosen better equipment. It was perfectly suited to a bike of this kind with limited mounting options. The bag never shifted while riding, nor did it get in the way even during spirited riding off-road. Not a single problem or complaint ? it kept my gear clean and dry through the varying conditions we were faced with and it was also easy to load and unload at the beginning and end of each day. I can and will heartily recommend Giant Loop gear to clients and friends.?

By | Honda, Racer, Riders | No Comments

Canadian rider and Overland Adventure Rally organizer Lawrence Hacking’s article recounting his experiences racing the Mongolian Rally appear in the February 2015 issue of American Motorcyclist magazine, published by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). He rode a 2014 Honda CRF 450X with Giant Loop’s MoJavi Saddlebag throughout the rally, and here’s what he wrote about it: “To lighten the load on myself, I used the Giant Loop MoJavi bags to carry the heavy items that I would likely need to finish, such as tools and a spare inner tube.”

Giant Loop Rider: GL Designer Explores Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route

By | Honda, Riders, Suzuki, Yamaha | No Comments

Giant Loop’s design director, Brian Frankle, recently joined up with a couple of local friends from Bend for an Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route adventure on his Suzuki DRZ400. Here are some of his pics and comments:

“Took a short 4 day trip on the moto on the Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route. Rendezvoused with a few others on day 2 in Ukiah, Oregon. Other than great company, seeing a Bighorn Sheep along the South Fork of the John Day River was a highlight.”

As a long-distance runner and through-hiker (just finish 5th in Pine to Palm 100, he’s hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, etc.) Brian’s an ultralight packer. On this trip he’s living the life of luxury with the Great Basin Saddlebag and Pannier Pockets on his DRZ400.

Our friend and customer Patrick used the Coyote Saddlebag and Fandango Pro Tank Bag on his Honda CRF250L.

“PK at Olive Lake Umatilla National Forest. Olive Lake is a reservoir that provided water and turned the generators at Fremont Power House…which in turn, supplied power to the largest Dredge used for gold mining in North America which sits in Sumpter, Oregon.”

Tech Tip: 1-Gallon Reda Gas Can in Coyote Saddlebag

By | Honda, Tech Tips, Uncategorized | No Comments

Take the insult out of “you’ve got gas!” Carry up to 2 GALLONS of extra fuel on your bike by inserting a 1-gallon Reda Innovations Gas Can into each of the lower “legs” of Giant Loop’s Coyote Saddlebag (works great in the Great Basin Saddlebag, too)!

1-gal Reda Gas Can fits Coyote Saddlebag

The Reda Gas Can’s angled shape fits perfectly into the bottom of the lower “legs” on the Coyote Saddlebag.

After filling the Reda can, wipe any spillage off the outside and use a heavy plastic bag to help contain the gas odor.

Simply slide the can into the Coyote Saddlebag, remembering to fold the storm flap over to give you easy sliding access to the zipper.

Plenty of room to spare, even with a gallon of gas in each side of the Coyote Saddlebag.

Zip it, grip it and rip it! You’ve got gas!

Keep your extra fuel weight, low, tight and balanced with the Reda can inside the Coyote Saddlebag

konflict motorsports alex martens and heather martensOne of the things we love our work at Giant Loop is the many friendships we’ve developed with colleagues, people like suspension master Alex Martens from Konflict Motorsports (and The Heavyweights racing team) and his lovely wife Heather. The Martens rolled through town while enjoying a summer adventure and stopped by the shop today, Heather riding a Honda CRF250L and Alex on a KTM 950 Super Enduro. We’re proud the Martens travel with Giant Loop’s Coyote Saddlebag and Diablo Pro Tank Bag on the Honda, and the Great Basin Saddlebag, Tillamook Dry Bag and Fandango Pro Tank Bag on the KTM.

They’re using the Pro model tank bags’ integrated electronics pass-through to keep their cell phones charged.

Giant Loop Rider: Apple Jam And I Make GPX Tracks In Hood River County For Rally In The Gorge

By | Honda, KTM, Riders | No Comments

IMG_0668

Getting the Giant Loop Dual Sport route sorted for Rally in the Gorge took the help of Apple Jam, from ADVrider. An avid KTM 990 Adventure rider, he has rolled every piece of two track in the area and knows how to link up some excitement for our ride.

Arriving in Parkdale at 3pm, I was anxious to get on the motos and get some tracks tucked into the bike’s Trail Tech Voyager. The weather was perfect, maybe a bit hot, and the air was clear. I was staging at Apple Jam’s and he was gracious enough to have me camp there. His KTM was getting fork service work so I brought the Honda XR650R and KTM 500EXC, for us to ride. He hadn’t ridden a new EXC so I rode the Honda and he happily climbed onto the KTM. I hadn’t been riding on this side of Mt Hood, so I was looking forward to following Apple Jam’s experienced lead and getting a taste of what kind of terrain was available. Needless to say, there was not a drop of disappointment until 9:08 pm and we hit the Sawtooth Roadhouse after closing, missing dinner. We made up for it with a drink or two when we finally made it back home…

There were several huge vista views.

Giant Loop Review: Thumperbay.com Wheelies Into Camp With Mojavi Saddlebag

By | Honda, Reviews | No Comments

The riders over at Thumperbay.com went camping on a Honda CRF250L, with the Mojavi Saddlebag and wrote a great review on their blog.

A Quote from the review
” …I spent some time in the garage getting the saddlebags fitted to the bike. They come with lots of extra webbing, to accomodate a wide variety of bikes I suppose, but for my purposes they present a lot of unessesary bulk and complication. After some some quick modifications, I came up with what I think is a clean, easy method to get them on and off the bike.

I am impressed with the build quality of the saddlebags, Giant Loop says they are manufactured with a kind of ‘truckers tarp’ that is extremly strong and durable. They seem well made to me.

After that it was time to experiment with what all could be fit inside them. One thing that was immediately apparent was just how suprisingly small they are. I guess this is both a blessing and a curse.”
