Giant Loop Racer: Rory Sullivan Finishes 17th At King Of The Motos

By | Giant Loop Gear, Kawasaki, Riders | No Comments

Giant Loop Racer and Sales Rep for 405motosales, Rory Sullivan #507, raced to the finish at the 2014 King Of The Motos. His combined time was 4 hours, 41 minutes and 17 seconds for the AM and PM motos, putting him in 17th place overall, among some world class competition. ?Rory raced with a Zig Zag Handlebar Bag to carry his gel supplements and a cell phone.

Rory said in his race recap:

“I’m up this morning and thinking about how the weekend went at King of the Moto’s. I felt good during Saturdays Qualifier but made one small mistake that cost me a bit of time. The Qualifier was around 3 min long so mistakes where costly. In the Sunday morning AM Final I raced well and gave it everything my 250F had but it was mostly flat out desert sections with a couple tech sections mixed in, I?defiantly lost time on the open stuff which was frustrating. I really need to say thanks to?Nate Delaney?at Dirt tricks for helping my gear it down for the race. The PM Final started with a wild land rush start down a sand hill and strait into one of the events famous sections. It was….. let just say interesting! I got to the top of the first section and my clutch was smoked and when I say smoked I mean would not move forward. I spent some time adjusting the cable all the way in and let it cool down, which helped but it was never the same the rest of the event. About 10 miles in I derailed my chain on a rocky climb and lost some more time. Bottom line is it was a tough relentless race but I was determined to finish, and I’m thankful I did. I finished 17th after they combined both the AM and PM races. I will be back next year better prepared. Huge thanks to Pro Caliber VancouverFly Racing, Evo ind,?Bell Powersports Northwest,?Smith Optics, USWE Hydration,FMF Racing,?Fusion Graphix?Dirt Tricks,?Rekluse Motor Sports,?Fasst Company,Fastway Pro?ProMoto Billet,?DeVol Engineering Inc.,Novik Gloves, Rigid industries.”

Nice Job Rory!

Giant Loop Racers: Dakar Stories, A Racer’s 12th Place Finish And A Finisher’s 76th Place Win

By | Beta, Blog, Giant Loop Gear, KTM, Riders | No Comments

Dakar is THE international offroad racing event of the year. Nothing thrills me more than New Years Day, since it indicates that start of Dakar is right around the corner.

Dakar veteran Riaan Van Niekerk ripped to a 12th place overall finish on board his Broadlink KTM 450RR, besting his rookie finish of 13th. He had his best stage time on Stage 5, coming in 4th place, against a laundry list of Factory-backed racers. ?Riaan uses the Mojavi for his practice rides, back home in South Africa.?Great Job Riaan!

At the other end of the pack, Luca Viglio, #173, finished 76th aboard his Boano Racing built Beta 450RR Atacama. Boano Racing is our Italian distributor.

Many times during the stages, Luca was faced with challenges that would keep him from finishing. Each time, he dug a bit deeper, or benefitted from the support of his team, locals and other racers, to help get him to the finish. I quoted a few remarks from Luca on ADVrider.com, translated by inmate auguzt. Thanks auguzt for sharing the news of Luca’s progress.

Giant Loop Rider: Prepping Our KTM 500 EXC For A Baja Trip

By | Blog, Events, Giant Loop Gear, KTM | No Comments

2014 has a few special rides scheduled for Giant Loop. The first ride is Baja next month, when HOC will travel South with GL Team Rider Brad, to ride with Chilly White of enduro360.com. HOC has always wanted to ride Baja and when Chilly invited him to join a ride this year, HOC jumped at the chance!

This led to evaluating Giant Loop’s KTM 500 EXC and getting some maintenance and setup details organized(and stripping the bike). ?The list had everything from gapping the valves, to tires, to suspension, to fuel filler filter sock. Of course, this is in addition to the discussion about which of the new 2014 Giant Loop gear to take on the ride. Coyote Saddle Bag is a no brainer, but which tank bag combination? Fandango Tank Bag, Diablo and Pannier Pockets or Buckin’ Roll with Pannier Pockets, what will it be?

First on the list was a valve check and GL racer Alex Sherman sharpened up his feeler gauges to perform the deed. After Alex gave the valve gaps a good gauging, he found them all in spec and none needed a shim swap. Next on the list was fresh lube, filters and rubber. I got the oil and filter managed, then pulled the Suspension off to send out to our friend Alex Martins at Konflict Suspension. Alex has a new dampening formula for the KTM 500 EXC and HOC is excited to try out the smoother action, during this ride. Next up is swapping the tires out for the Maxxis IT-Desert. The KTM still had the OEM Pirelli front and a half worn Dunlop 606 rear, so with both wheels off, the tire swap was gonna be easy.

Stay tuned for the next round of prep work!

Giant Loop Review: Tillamook Dry Bag, Rogue Dry Bag in BMW Owners News

By | BMW, Giant Loop Gear, Reviews | No Comments

Thank you Kit J. Vercella for the comprehensive review of Giant Loop’s Tillamook Dry Bag and Rogue Dry Bag in the January 2014 “Kit And Caboodle” column of BMW Owners News magazine. This is our favorite part:

“A personal side note: Although not necessarily relevant to your purchasing decision, there is something heartening about a group of adventure riders down the street who have the vision and technical expertise to create top-shelf, functional motorcycle gear every bit as good (maybe even better) than their corporate rivals worldwide.”

Giant Loop Tech Tip: Siskiyou Panniers On KTM 690 Enduro, With Racks

By | Blog, Fitment, Giant Loop Gear, KTM, Photos, Tech Tips | No Comments

As Giant Loop Rider Noah Horak makes his way around the world, more riders are seeing the Siskiyou Panniers?in use on KTM’s 690 Enduro. Noah is in Japan presently, hanging with gold plated Monkey bikers.

We have received several questions about using our panniers on the 690 and just got a great email from a customer, with his creative and effective solution.

I’ll share it here:

Giant Loop rider Allen wrote us and said, ?”Yes, I’ve been following Noah on his travels.?Here are some pictures of my installation of the Siskiyou Panniers.?I decided to use shock cord to thread the bags onto the Rally Raid racks. ?So far I really like the way it has worked.”690sisk-5

Allen added, “I folded over the Velcro and am just using the straps for support across the top. ?That leaves the gas cap open for easy re-fueling.”690-sisk

“On the 690 I mounted the heat shield on the very end and so far it is looking very secure.”

I was checking out some pics of riders in action and found this SWEET shot of Giant Loop Rep Rory Sullivan of 405MotoSales. He has got the gas on in that drift and Jock Bradley captured the moment perfectly! I know Rory is happy to have the wind and weather protection provided by the extra tough?Bushwacker hand guards. Easily installed with the included 16″ Pronghorn poly straps, Bushwackers add their coverage by mounting over your existing hand guards.

Giant Loop Rider: Jill Rides 1800 Miles To Leguna Seca, On Her Yamaha FZ6 With Great Basin Saddle Bag

By | Blog, Fitment, Giant Loop Gear, Photos, Riders, Saddlebags, Uncategorized, Yamaha | No Comments

image002

Giant Loop Rider Jill used a Great Basin on her FZ6, to stow her camping gear and supplies for 10 days of camping, during her ride to Leguna Seca in California. ?She wrote us saying:

“Subject: Thanks for the product! Great Basin

This summer, I took my FZ6 on an 1800 mile road trip from Seattle to Leguna Seca, CA and back.? The Giant Loop worked great on my bike!? It was easy to pack and carry my gear. I camped the entire time, so I not only had supplies for 10 days but camping gear as well.? The only modification that I will do is to purchase a rear rack to help cinch the bag back further on the seat…
…I also use this on my BMW 650 Sertao when I dont want to ride with the panniers. This was a great and inexpensive way to set up my fz for touring.
Thanks again for an awesome product…

Jill…

Jill, thank you for sharing your story and sweet pics with us.
Ride while you can!

Giant Loop Review: December 2013 Dirt Bike Magazine Highlights Rubber Boa Straps

By | Giant Loop Gear, KTM, Reviews, Riders | No Comments

Giant Loop attended the 2013 KTM Adventure Rally in Steamboat Springs, last September. Dirt Bike Magazine was also there, since it was the first chance to demo ride the new KTM 1190 Adventure and Adventure R. While there, they covered some of the innovative products on vendor row and found our new Rubber Boa Straps. Dirt Bike said in their current issue: “Several riders used Giant Loop’s specialized bungees to hold stuff down. Clean and sano.”
