Giant Loop Racer: Malle Moto Dakar Finisher, Brett Cummings, Now Racing For Giant Loop

Giant Loop signed a sponsorship agreement with South African Brett Cummings, also know as Rallyerider, to his ‘book Friends. Our connection to Brett came through our South African partner, Chris at Desert Lizard. Thanks Chris and Brett for the support!!

Brett is joining the Giant Loop Team as a racer and test rider after riding his KTM 450RR to a  28th place finish overall and 2nd in the Malle Moto Class, in the 2014 edition of Dakar. His previous Rally Raid experience includes finishing 43rd in 2013 edition of Dakar, 7th in the Merzouga 2012 and 4th in the Australasian Safari 2012.

Giant Loop Review: Paul Rides South America On Yamaha Tenere 660 With Siskiyou Panniers And Diablo Tank Bag

“After a year on the road in South America, I still wasn’t happy with my panniers.  I started with hard panniers then switched to conventional soft panniers, but neither worked for me.  I quickly decided hard panniers were not what I wanted when riding in the dirt (I finally lost one when riding too fast on some serious Bolivian washboard, which was probably a blessing – meant I had to buy some soft panniers before I got a broken ankle in a fall!).  I could never get the soft panniers to fit really snug to the bike, and they were a pain to take off and put on – an unavoidable requirement sometimes when staying in hostels.

Eventually I got my hands on some Siskiyous.  I had been using a Diablo tank bag for several months – I swapped it for the bigger tank bag I started with, which kept hitting me in the Crown Jewels when standing on the pegs!  I was super happy with the Diablo, so I reckoned the Siskiyous were worth a shot.  I think I’ve nailed it: really secure, easy to mount and remove, weight nicely forward on the bike, seriously tested in an Argentinian thunderstorm and stayed 100% waterproof…  Very happy so far.

I wasn’t sure how they would fit the 660 Tenere because of the prominent pillion handles, but I’ve had no problems.  I’ve still got my old pannier rack fitted, but I’m toying with removing it to save a few kg and seeing how things go.”

Giant Loop Designer, Brian Frankle, added a whole jar of secret sauce to the 2014 Fandango Tank Bag, creating our first Pro model.

Major updates of Giant Loop’s largest tank bag (8 liters) focus on expandability, electronics compatibility, and features driven by rider feedback. An electronics pass-through enables on-bike charging and power inside the tank bag and/or the clear vinyl map pocket top. The Fandango’s underside includes a concealed document pocket, and two separate side zippers for easy mounting to harness. Full length interior lining with hook-and-loop accepting fabric, movable divider with elastic tire pressure gauge holder and slots, exterior mesh pocket and D-ring mounts for new optional Buckin’ Roll pannier pockets (2 liters each side) are key new features. Fuel fills are now easily accessed by simply unzipping either side from the harness, and the concave front allows vent hoses to breath. Giant Loop Rider Ethics: Trail Conservation Starts With Us, So Pack Out The Trash!

 I just enjoyed a great post by fellow inmate Ford_Perfect in ADVrider.com’s Tread Lightly section. He posted a video, made by his friend that posts as eveRide on Youtube. The message is simple and echoed by your friends at Giant Loop: If you see random trash on your favorite trail, “PICK IT UP AND PACK IT OUT”. The message is along the lines of  Ghandi’s  statement, “We must BE the change, we wish to see in the world.”  

The video suggests a couple methods for how to facilitate packing out trash, found on the trail. One method mentioned is to take a spare drybag, like our Rogue Dry Bag and some straps, like our Pronghorns, to load up and haul out the abandoned refuse. Without our participation, trail system and land managers will be faced with spending part of their management budget on trash clean up, instead of trail improvements. Each year our own local OHV park is tasked with removing tons of trash, piled in the designated OHV riding areas. Watch the video, do the math and do your part to keep our trails open and accessible for your favorite activity, Motorcycling!

Giant Loop Racer: Rosie The Rippers Womens Team Take First At 24hrs Of Starvation Ridge

Giant Loop Racer Tracy was on the winning Women’s team for the 24Hrs of Starvation Ridge, called “Rosie the Rippers”. Her team used Bushwacker Hand Guards to keep the cold off their hands, during the night stage of their race.  She wrote in and sent us pics of the team in action.

Giant Loop Rider: Simone Rides His 50cc To Germany For Elefantentreffen

Giant Loop Rider Simone Cannizzo braved the Winter riding conditions and rode north from Milan to the Elefantentreffen. The Elefantentreffen is a winter motorcycle rally that was started in 1956 and takes place in the forest of Bavaria, southern Germany. Simone rode his 50cc enduro with Coyote Saddle Bag, camping at the location of the event. Looked like a cold ride!!

Giant Loop Racer: Rory Sullivan Finishes 17th At King Of The Motos

Giant Loop Racer and Sales Rep for 405motosales, Rory Sullivan #507, raced to the finish at the 2014 King Of The Motos. His combined time was 4 hours, 41 minutes and 17 seconds for the AM and PM motos, putting him in 17th place overall, among some world class competition.  Rory raced with a Zig Zag Handlebar Bag to carry his gel supplements and a cell phone.

Rory said in his race recap:

“I’m up this morning and thinking about how the weekend went at King of the Moto’s. I felt good during Saturdays Qualifier but made one small mistake that cost me a bit of time. The Qualifier was around 3 min long so mistakes where costly. In the Sunday morning AM Final I raced well and gave it everything my 250F had but it was mostly flat out desert sections with a couple tech sections mixed in, I defiantly lost time on the open stuff which was frustrating. I really need to say thanks to Nate Delaney at Dirt tricks for helping my gear it down for the race. The PM Final started with a wild land rush start down a sand hill and strait into one of the events famous sections. It was….. let just say interesting! I got to the top of the first section and my clutch was smoked and when I say smoked I mean would not move forward. I spent some time adjusting the cable all the way in and let it cool down, which helped but it was never the same the rest of the event. About 10 miles in I derailed my chain on a rocky climb and lost some more time. Bottom line is it was a tough relentless race but I was determined to finish, and I’m thankful I did. I finished 17th after they combined both the AM and PM races. I will be back next year better prepared. Giant Loop News: Great Basin Saddlebag on Ducati “Terra Corsa” in Motorcyclist Magazine

“Every year I go with friends on an off-road adventure ride in southern Oregon. This year I was going to take a [Ducati] Multistrada, and I had it on the lift to install a set of Continental TKC 80  off-road tires. The [Ducati] Panigale was on the lift right next to it. One of my buddies stopped by, saw the two bikes side by side, and said, ‘You should put those TKC 80s on the Panigale and take that.’ I said, ‘Why, yes, I should.” — Arun Sharma, “Me & My Bike,” Motorcyclist magazine, March 2014

Sharma strapped a first-generation Great Basin Saddlebag on his modified superbike, and he and his friends took their annual dirt roads tour in Giant Loop’s own backyard. In the photo, Sharma’s at Fremont Point, overlooking Summer Lake, where Giant Loop goes for our annual customer appreciation ride.

Ducati’s Quentin Wilson (who took the photo of Sharma) has been riding with the Great Basin Saddlebag and Fandango Tank Bag on his bike (Ducati Streetfighter, fly-and-ride trip to Italy to tour on a Ducati Multistrada, etc.) since Giant Loop first introduced these bags.
